Etruscan necropolises
The Etuscans had their own religion. They identified with the mother of all things – Earth, and saw the afterlife as a journey that began in the ground. Thus they dug into the earth and built grand tombs to lie their dead in and provide them with the most honourable starting point for their journey beyond.
