Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana are known as the Three Tufo Towns of the Maremman Hills – a very prestigious accolade that comes with orange flag recognition from the Italian Touring Club and a deep commitment to preserve their environmental splendour.

However, by all accounts, Sorano is the most beautiful and genuine of the three. Intimately carved into a small valley, it is surrounded by ancient buildings and a stunning landscape. The streets within the town itself are a maze of tunnels, hidden passages and dizzying stairways. All paths lead to the town’s most striking monument – the Masso Leopoldino – an ancient 17th century rock fortress bordered by il Cortilone – an old Orsini barn now used as an exhibition space.

The Church of St Nicholas is a short distance from the fortress and is home to relics personally gifted to the Soranese cardinal, Angelo Comastri, by Pope John Paul II. And overlooking all of this beauty is the monumental Orsini castle – the defensive bastion of the city throughout the Middle Ages and the rock that stood between Sorano and the invading Sienese and Orvieto armies.

From the castle, you can follow any of the doors out into surrounding the countryside and onto the Etruscan “Vie Cave” roads, which wind around the banks of the Lente River.
